About the Marian Anderson Award
Recognizing the transformative role of artists beyond performance.
Purpose of the award
The Marian Anderson Award was created in 1998 in Philadelphia to honor performing artists who combine artistic achievement with meaningful leadership on behalf of humanitarian causes.
The award is named for Marian Anderson, whose career and public service exemplified courage, artistic excellence and a commitment to expanding opportunities for others.
Art and community
In addition to celebrating artist humanitarians, the historical award program supported emerging and young artists in Philadelphia and the surrounding region through grant and recognition initiatives.
